It seems that almost every dietary habit has at some point been linked to an increased risk of cancer. In recent years, the idea has emerged that drinking very hot beverages like coffee and tea could contribute to esophageal cancer.

Years old theory states that hot liquids such as coffee or tea could destroy the inner lining of the esophagus, requiring the cells to continually regenerate. But how far is it correct? Should we stop starting out day with the sip of hot tea/coffee.

Let’s find the truth with our expert Dr Sivaram Ganesamoni, Senior Consultant, Oncology, MGM Cancer Institute. Learn from him that how hot beverages can\cannot affect our oral cavity.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women, accounting for more than 1 in 10 new cancer diagnoses each year. It is the second most common cause of death from cancer among women in the world. Breast cancer evolves silently, and most disease is discovered on routine screening.

But the first step to recovery is to talk to about it. Most women hide their pain & suffering as it’s still a taboo in our country. On Breast Cancer Awareness Month, MGM Cancer Institute organised a special event, Walk in Pink @ Namma Chennai on October 30, 2022. This Walkathon was an initiative to promote breast cancer awareness and highlight the need for the right treatment at the right time. Students from various colleges and MGM staffs took a walk to Anna Nagar Tower Park spreading the message. The event was graced by Thiru MK Mohan, MLA, Anna Nagar, Chennai and Ms. Revathi, Actress, Film Director & Social Worker. Breast cancer survivors also shared stories and highlighted the need of early diagnosis.

A risk factor is anything that increases a person’s chance of getting a disease such as cancer. Different cancers have different risk factors. Some risk factors, like smoking, can be changed. These factors are related to the risk of lung cancer in general.

Lung cancer screening is a process that’s used to detect the presence of lung cancer in otherwise healthy people with a high risk of lung cancer. The goal of lung cancer screening is to detect lung cancer at a very early stage — when it’s more likely to be cured. By the time lung cancer signs and symptoms develop, the cancer is usually too advanced for curative treatment. Studies show lung cancer screening reduces the risk of dying of lung cancer.

Dr Balaji Ramani, Senior Consultant, Oncology, MGM Cancer Institute, Chennai has talked how lung cancer is the leading cause of deaths in India & how the early diagnosis can be helpful in saving lives.

Cancer is a broad term. It describes the disease that results when cellular changes cause the uncontrolled growth and division of cells. Some types of cancer cause rapid cell growth, while others cause cells to grow and divide at a slower rate. There are many causes of cancer, and some are preventable.

People who seek cancer care hit barriers at every turn. Income, education, geographical location, and discrimination based on ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, and lifestyle are just a few of the factors that can negatively affect care.

If you were to be diagnosed with cancer, how do you think you would feel? It would depend on the stage of cancer of course, but there’s a good chance that no matter the details, the word “cancer” would make the diagnosis much more frightening. Frightening enough, in fact, to do you as much harm, or more, than the disease itself.

There has been a lot of progress in medical science and more options now available than there were even 5 years ago. Today doctors better understand how to find many cancers in the early stages. They also have more treatments to try if one doesn’t work.

Lung cancer is one of the commonest cancers and cause of cancer related deaths all over the world. Cancer can grow in your body for a long time — years — before you know it’s there. Lung cancer often doesn’t cause symptoms in early stages. While there are many factors that can increase your risk of lung cancer, smoking any kind of tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars or pipes is the biggest single risk factor. The treatment will depend on the type of lung cancer you have, where it is, how far it’s spread and many other factors.

There are various misconceptions when it comes to cancer and cancer cure. Dr Dhanasekar Padmanabhan, Senior Consultant, Department of Surgical Oncology talks about the contribution of alternative medicine for cancer care. He firmly says that there is no cure for cancer in alternative medical practices.

He also implies the foundation of modern medicine for cancer care has undergone several stages of research and innovation to help patients suffering from cancer. Dr Dhanasekar hopes and assures that although there is no cure for cancer now, alternative medicines are also continuously evolving and there might be a breakthrough in future.

“Is cancer hereditary? “”All cancers are genetic but not all cancers are hereditary”” says Dr Veda Padma Priya, Senior Consultant, Breast Oncology and Oncoplasty. Yes, cancer is due to genetic changes, but that doesn’t generally mean it’s inherited.

Although cancer is common, only 5% of it is hereditary, meaning an individual has inherited an increased risk for cancer from one of their parents. This inherited risk for cancer is caused by a small change (called a mutation) in a gene, which can be passed from one generation to the next in a family. The remaining 95% is not hereditary. Most of the time, there is a confusion when people hear that cancer is caused due to genes and they assume it’ll be passed down to their children. This is not true.

“Cancer is not real, it’s a myth created by doctors. Sounds absurd?

Dr Sivaram Ganesamoni, Senior Consultant, Department of Surgical Oncology, shares with us various misconceptions about cancer that are being spread on social media. People tend to take cancer lightly, believing the fake news and messages that go viral online. He says, “”We might not be in control of our lifestyle, but being aware of our vulnerability to cancer will go a long way in taking preventive measures.””

“Does doing a biopsy make cancer spread faster? No! Dr Sivakumar Mahalingam, Senior Consultant, Department of Surgical Oncology at MGM Healthcare, shares with us what a biopsy is and whether or not it’ll cause cancer to spread faster. He says that a biopsy is a procedure performed on the patient to take a small tissue from the cancer cyst for examination. This procedure is done so that the cancer cells can be analysed properly and appropriate treatment can be given. Dr Sivakumar says that it’s a completely safe procedure and patients shouldn’t be misguided by common myths about biopsies.
